Jade

Chapter One:

The silent whisper of the willow trees woke Jade.  She wasn’t sure why it woke her, but there was someone or something watching.  A creepy feeling went up her thin back. 

“Remember Jade, the cougars are out and about.  Be careful and come back before dark,” her mother had said to her before she left. 

Jade didn’t move.  She imagined a cougar or panther crouched above her in the willows, ready to pounce.  Finally grabbing her book, she walked as calmly as she could down the path.  When she was at least a quarter of a mile away, she sprang into a sprint, her bare feet smacking the soft dirt.  Breathing hard, she felt piercing eyes behind her.  They dug through her light shirt and into her back.  Suddenly, without watching, she tripped over a large stone and hit the ground, hard.  Her long black hair flew around her copper face and stung her dark eyes.  Just as she looked up, a startling sight paralyzed her swimming mind.  Standing before her, a wild but tranquil silhouette stood against the rust-colored, soft ocean sky.  It was a horse.
