Horse Dreams
By Christine

Chapter One:

The back yard seemed to watch me, telling me I had no horse.  I knew that.  I would never have one.  My brother and I have a dog and a cat.  I had to at least see a horse, feel one, ride one.  And, today I was going to do all that.  I was going to the stables near my house.  I needed a friend.  I rode to the stables on my bike.  My hair was under a baseball cap, but kept flying out from under it.

Maybe I could get a horse.

When I got to the stables, the horses were running and rearing in the arenas and pastures.  I saw one that caught my eye; a beautiful Palomino.  He kept licking his bit, trying to get it off.  He chewed it, but the bit wouldn't come out.  I had to get closer.  I went closer to the horse and blew.  The horse blew back, so I petted him.  The rider was busy talking.

"He's a Quarter Horse Palomino," he said.  "He's about six."

He slapped the horse.  I had to leave.  I couldn't stand watching him hit the horse.  I jumped on my bike and rode on to school.

When I got to school, I put my bike in the bike poles and ran to get to my reading class.  I am good at reading.  I can read my mom and dad's books (well, some of them) and I can read books in an hour that some of my neighbors days and days to read.  Reading is the only class I like.  I got into the room when the bell was ringing.  I sat down in my chair, just as my teacher came in.

To be continued...
